We often associate complexity with value.
A method with many steps and rules feels much more appealing because it requires us to do meaningful work. It separates us from the crowd, almost to the point where we wear this badge with pride.
Yet, complexity is not always the answer. Simple practices can also lead to profound transformation.
The Reiki principles are one example.
What Are The Reiki Principles
This is the first thing you learn as a Reiki practitioner.
We use the Reiki principles to open the self-treatment, center ourselves, and transition into a meditative state.
But because they are short and easy to remember, they are sometimes overlooked. We may even repeat them mindlessly, skipping their value entirely.
Yet, like an iceberg with a small tip above the water’s surface and a vast underwater mass, the true value of the Reiki principles goes far beyond the words themselves.
These principles can help us develop a healthier relationship with ourselves and the world around us.
When repeated daily, they become positive affirmations.
They can help rewire the subconscious mind.
And guide us toward our true nature.
But to do so, we must first recognize their impact and appreciate their intrinsic value.
So, let’s take them one by one.
How I Use The Reiki Principles
One note before we get started…
Reiki principles have been interpreted in many ways over the last 100 years. But I believe they circle back to the same core meaning.
I didn’t like their negative format: “Just for today, I will not worry.”
So I adapted them into a present, positive affirmation: “Just for today, I am grateful.”
This makes them much more valuable and effective.
The Reiki Principles
Every Reiki principle begins with: “Just for today.”
These words bring us back to the present moment. The past has already happened. We can learn from it, heal it, and make peace with it. But we cannot return and change it.
The future has not yet happened, and much of it will be shaped by the choices we make today.
“Just for today” brings our focus to “right now.”
A promise made in the moment is easier to manage.
Change begins now.
Just for Today, I Am Grateful
Gratitude is foundational for inner healing.
It’s how we practice appreciation for what we have and remind ourselves of the abundance flowing into our lives.
Without this conscious exercise, it’s easy to drift from reality.
To let scarcity dominate our minds and emotional state.
When we live every day from a state of abundance, life becomes an opportunity for growth. Obstacles are no longer barriers but steps we must climb in our evolutionary process.
Gratitude opens the door toward our potential.
Just for Today, I Am Happy
We can’t acknowledge gratitude without feeling happy.
And we can’t tap into happiness if we’re not grateful.
So, when we affirm, “I am happy,” we invite the mind and soul to connect with the energy of joy and abundance.
Happiness results from the choices we make every day. From the people we meet and the situations we find ourselves in.
Adversity will be part of the journey.
But we can choose how we respond to it.
When we practice gratitude and constantly invite happiness into our lives, we’ll face obstacles from a higher vibrational state.
This will not make them easier to overcome.
But it will make us wiser in our approach.
We’ll be working to answer meaningful questions instead of battling petty thoughts.
Just for Today, I Am at Peace
If you are grateful, you are happy.
If you are happy, you are at peace.
This is my positive version of “Just for today, I will not worry.”
Worry is a natural reaction when we don’t feel safe. In small amounts, it may encourage us to pay attention. But excessive worry can exhaust the mind.
Affirming “I am at peace” can foster understanding and bring us back into balance.
It won’t make the problem go away, but it can create the proper environment to face whatever comes our way with confidence and calm.
From this state, we may see possible solutions more clearly, make healthier decisions, and avoid reacting from fear.
We don’t need to control everything around us.
All we need is to control the balance within ourselves.
Just for Today, I Do My Work Honestly
Honesty requires courage.
Courage to admit when we’re wrong and accept our limitations. It might hurt in the moment. But we’ll be grateful for the relief we’ll enjoy in the future.
This principle targets dishonest behavior. Doing work without theft or corruption. Work that brings us value without hurting others.
But it’s also about being honest with ourselves.
Treating our responsibilities with respect and being true in our relationships. What we do daily shapes how we show up in the world. So if we want life to treat us better, we should become the reflection of those demands.
It all starts from within.
Just for Today, I Respect and Am Kind to All Life
This principle brings all the others together.
Respect and kindness should begin with ourselves. From there, they can extend toward family, friends, animals, nature, and every being you encounter.
Some people enter our lives to support us.
Others arrive to teach us a lesson.
We may not understand every encounter.
But it’s within our power to choose how we respond.
What matters most is making the distinction between offering ourselves selflessly and becoming a slave to external desires. We should be kind and respect all life without compromising ourselves.
Setting clear boundaries and protecting our time and energy are essential parts of becoming a valuable member of this world.
Why Use The Reiki Principles
Words carry energy. Even simple ones. It is why a wealthy person who has health, family, and friends can be miserable. The conversation unfolding in their mind dictates how they feel throughout the day.
The Reiki principles are potent affirmations.
They can shift your vibration and, therefore, your behavior. They can pull you away from negative thinking and help you see the glass half full. You open up to possibilities instead of locking yourself in a cage.
Every word shapes your approach to life. When paired with Reiki practice, these principles have the potential to build your character and enhance your spiritual values.
You do not have to transform everything at once.
Begin with “just for today.”
