3 Misconceptions About Reiki Symbols That Create More Confusion Than Progress

Reiki symbols are often surrounded by mystery.

  • Some say they must remain secret.
  • Others believe they hold no power on their own.
  • A few argue that only attuned practitioners can use them.

These beliefs limit our understanding more than protect it.

So… let’s challenge them!

After 20+ years of practicing and teaching Reiki, I’ve come to a different conclusion. Still, it’s one that respects tradition while embraces growth. I firmly believe that we should all approach Reiki without hesitation, doubt, or uncertainty.

Curiosity can thrive next to fundamental principles.

Let’s break down some of the most common misconceptions about Reiki symbols.

1. Reiki symbols should be kept secret.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings.

When I started sharing my Reiki journey online, I was surprised how many practitioners were reluctant to discuss Reiki symbols. Yet, they had a point. They wanted to preserve the sacredness of these spiritual tokens.

But being scared doesn’t mean they must stay secret!

On the contrary…

Presenting them (correctly while preserving their value) to those who are attuned to Reiki can only enhance their experience. Reiki symbols are beneficial in nature. So, even if we discuss them with inexperienced individuals, they will still be harmless.

One of two things can happen:

  1. The unattained person can become interested in Reiki.
  2. Find the information useless and move on.

Either way… there’s hardly any negative implication.

2. Reiki symbols work only guided by a practitioner.

This is a true statement, but incomplete.

Symbols are more than lines on a piece of paper – they are spiritual concepts. And, each connects to a unique manifestation of the universal life force energy. Therefore, they have the potential to spread part of their energy and information when displayed in a room.

Circling back… this affects no one because Reiki symbols are beneficial.

3. You can only use the Reiki symbols you are attuned to.

Attunements are like energetic gateways.

But they are not magical. You can only find results through practice, meditation, and exploration. That’s why chasing attunements thinking they will improve your practice is a flawed approach to Reiki.

You can achieve a lot with Usui Reiki level 1 alone.

You can even work with Reiki symbols if you have a close connection with the universal energy.

Still, once you reach level 2, you have broader access to the concept of symbols. This is a very important distinction to internalize. As a Usui Reiki level 2 practitioner, you can now tap into and channel the unique manifestation of Reiki symbols in general.

Therefore, intention and dedication trump attunements.

Reiki symbols are like bridges between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Your spiritual journey is not linear.

While guidance and structure can help, there are no strict rules you must follow. It all comes down to how you want to feel in pursue of your goals. It goes without saying that this will influence your relationship with the universal energy.

Reiki symbols are no different.

With good intent, patience, and respect for the craft, you can share your knowledge without worries. I believe it’s more important to educate others openly than hide behind concepts you can’t even explain. The more people become aware of their energetic side and how it functions, the better our world will be.

Evolution is all about letting go of limiting beliefs and having the courage to look into the future.

Don’t you agree?
