“If I had a dime for every time someone asked me this, I’d be rich.”
That’s exactly how I feel after 20+ years of practicing Reiki.
You’d be amazed how many people still ask me why I include chakras in Reiki. They argue that they are not part of the traditional system. Reiki wasn’t taught like that initially.
Fortunately, the answer is relatively straightforward.
First and foremost, I don’t see Reiki as a rigid form of energy healing. Many use their beliefs to exclude everything else. But I believe that there’s always something good to learn from each experience and there’s no one person who holds all the answers.
Reiki is meant to help heal the mind, body, and soul by addressing their energetic counterparts.
Our energetic anatomy includes:
• Energy fields.
• Energy channels.
• And energy centers.
The latter, which we all know as ‘chakras‘, is probably the most important.
Chakras govern major parts of our body. The universal energy flows through each chakra, cleansing and balancing everything in its path. The 7 primary chakras engulf our entire energetic anatomy.
In traditional Reiki, you target the major organs and/or parts of your body. Whether you do it consciously or not, you’re working with your chakras as well.
Of course, it’s better to do it with intention than not, and here’s why:
#1 Make The Most Out Of Reiki By Embracing Its Flexibility
I believe that no practice or belief system holds the ultimate truth.
People developed through different habits and traditions. These differences make us unique and vibrant. I think it’s good to preserve them and borrow what makes sense.
Why argue when we can spread love.
Reiki is no different. Even though I see it as a very complete solution, I don’t think one should not experience or experiment with other healing practices. Let me give you a few examples:
Reiki and massge: Activating your palms before a massage session will allow you to combine the benefits of both practices. It goes without saying that massages are quite intimate. So why not make the most out of this transfer of energy.
Reiki and meditation: Whether you’re into Theta Healing, Vipassana or just simple meditations where you focus on the present moment, you can combine them with Reiki for and enhance effect. Together, they can further open your chakras, especially the superior ones, and increase your connection to your higher self. This translates into better awareness, a more balanced immune system, and robust mental strength.
Reiki and physical activity: Reiki can be a reliable partner in sports. Aside from its mental benefits, Reiki can stimulate your stamina and increase endurance. By integrating your chakras in this process, you’ll have a more complete and effective energetic aid.
It might not guarantee gold medals, but it will definitely enhance focus and awareness.
For example:
Novak Djokovic, one of the best tennis players of all time, has the Cho Ku Rei Reiki symbol on top of his tennis shoes to remind him to focus all his energy here, now.
Reiki didn’t bring him almost 100 ATP Trophies, but it was certainly part of the journey.
#2 Why Are Chakras Indispensable In Energy Healing
Chakras are like vortexes of energy.
Each chakra regulates the flow of both universal and vital energy. This makes them essential in maintaining the good balance of your energetic body. That’s why I believe chakras are not just important but essential in energy healing.
Here’s a quick breakdown of their role:
- Crown Chakra – governs the brain hemispheres.
- Third Eye Chakra – influences the front and back parts of the brain.
- Throat Chakra – manages the health of the thyroid, larynx, and esophagus.
- Heart Chakra – oversees the heart, thymus, and lungs.
- Solar Plexus Chakra – supports the health of the spleen, stomach, liver, and gallbladder.
- Sacral Chakra – governs the kidneys and digestive system.
- Root Chakra – is responsible for the health of the sexual organs, joints, and ligaments in the pelvic area.
Given the significance of these chakras and Reiki’s adaptable nature, addressing these energy centers in your healing practice is both natural and effective from a therapeutic standpoint.
#3 Traditional Reiki Already Includes Chakras In Their Hand Positions
The traditional Reiki hand positions follow the 7 primary chakras.
Whether you do it consciously or not, you’re still addressing your main energy center. The health of our organs depends on their good functioning. Plus, each organ has its own energy centers, which are usually classified as secondary chakras.
Blending traditional Reiki with the chakra system is a more complete and rewarding approach. You’re already doing it, but it can be more effective if your intention is clear.
At the end of the day…
“Energy flows where intention goes.”
A Quick Recap
• Chakras are not a different type of energy practice.
• They don’t interfere with the traditional Reiki hand positions. In fact, they complement them and enhance the core teachings.
• The more precise your intention is, the more effective the practice. Therefore, be mindful of both your chakras and your physical body.
• Reiki is flexible and doesn’t promote a closed system. Feel free to experiment and borrow methods from other practices to enrich your experience.
